In fact, every woman has some type of breast asymmetry. If this situation is tolerable, women may not care much about discrepancy. However, if the breast asymmetry is extreme level then this may not be tolerated. This is defined primarily by the person noticing the asymmetry and the diagnosis reached after a doctor's examination.

Congenital problems are among the causes of breast asymmetry. Among these, the absence of nipples or the presence of more than one accessory nipple on a breast, the absence of a breast completely, the presence of an accessory breast in the part of one breast towards the armpit are among the congenital causes of breast asymmetry. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are the main causes of breast asymmetries that occur later in life. If there is more milk production in one breast after birth, this breast is more developed than the other breast that causes breast asymmetry. Also if baby suckes more on one breast during the breastfeeding period, then that also causes breast asymmetry.

There are milk ducts and adipose tissue in normal breast tissue. Hormonal changes (estrogen, progesterone and prolactin) during pregnancy can cause various changes in the breast tissue. Because a number of synthesis processes are required in the cells for the breast tissue to produce milk after pregnancy.

The duct cells enlarge, their number increases, so the total volume of breast tissue increases. If the increase is different in any of breasts, this can also lead to breast asymmetry. Breast asymmetries after breastfeeding are not caused by the adipose tissue but by melting of the milk-forming glands usually, which we call the mammary gland tissue.

If melting occurs in different amounts, breast asymmetry will develop or f it is due to weight change, then the cause of asymmetry is the decrease or increase in the adipose tissue of the breast. But this is nothing like the melting of the milk ducts after the breastfeeding period.

Usually, if there is a moderate increase or decrease in both breasts then asymmetry may not be very noticeable. In general, after bariatric surgeries, breast tissue sags and this is how breast reduction achieved. If asymmetry is detected it could be surgically corrected.

One of the causes of breast asymmetry is deformities that may be seen in the breast tissue due to various subsequent tumors. In the simplest form and in some cases these tumors can cause contraction on the breast skin and nipple. If the tumor grows too much, it can cause lump-shaped masses in the breast tissue.

In this case, important thing is to evaluate the tumor causing this deformity with biopsy and to decide whether it is benign or malignant. Also various conditions could cause redness and inflammatory on the skin as well as asymmetry on the breast. These diseases can be treated with various methods. So, patients could be recovered from asymmetry.

What Are Breast Asymmetry Treatment Methods?

As a treatment method in breast asymmetry, primarily decision should be made as to which of the asymmetric breasts will be intervened. Question is reduction on large breast or augmentation on smaller breast? The answer to this question should be given by the patient and the doctor together by presenting the advantages and disadvantages during and after the treatment. If patient decides to bring and lift smaller breast to the larger breast size, then this could be achieved by placing prostheses under breast.

A drain is placed under both breasts to prevent the accumulation of body fluids and bleeding in the form of leakage.

If surgeon approves it to be appropriate then drains are removed and patient can be discharged the next day. In cases, where patient wants to reduce the size of the larger breast, the excess tissues in larger breast are removed, and remaining tissues in both breasts can be hung from the inside to the chest wall and lifted. A drain is placed under both breasts to prevent the accumulation of body fluids and bleeding in the form of leakage. Then, patient is hospitalized for approx. 3 days and discharged after drains are removed. This could be considered to be better when compared to other methods in terms of patient satisfaction Because other technique involves placing prostheses under breast area which is limited to certain sizes.

Therefore, it may not be possible to achieve the desired symmetry. In the breast reduction technique, the desired amount of fat tissue can be removed in order to provide symmetry from the larger breast. In this way, it is much easier to achieve symmetry. This gives better results in terms of patient satisfaction.

In congenital breast asymmetries, excessive nipple and breast tissue can be removed and the missing nipple can be formed by surgeon. The tissue named as accessory breast could be removed with surgical techniques. With the methods to be applied in breast asymmetry, patient will both have a fine look aesthetically and will get rid of disturbing anxieties psychologically.

Benign or malignant tumors that cause breast asymmetry are removed by an oncologist surgeon, and some asymmetrical situation that may occur can be corrected with techniques described above by a plastic surgeon.
