What is Facial Implant?

Facial implants, which are used to improve boththe size and appearance of different areas on the face, are individuallydesigned. These implants, which are pre-shaped, solid and three-dimensionalobjects, can be applied in various parts of the face such as the chin, nose, nose edge and cheeks. In general, synthetic materials such as silicone are usedin facial implants with application areas of the chin, cheeks and cheekbones.Implants provide restructuring of the face and defining the lines. At the sametime, sagging and dimples on the face are also removed with this method and theface is provided with a much younger and more attractive appearance.

Facial implants, which are produced in harmonywith human tissues, can be produced from polyethylene material as well assilicone. These implants, which are made of materials that can be easily placedon the face, are placed through small incisions. The incisions made to placethe implants are usually made inside the mouth or under the chin. Siliconeimplants are placed directly, while polyethylene implants are fixed to thebones. Facial implant operations, which take between 1 and 3 hours, can beperformed under local or general anesthesia according to the doctor'spreference.

What are the Conditions That May Require a Facial Implant?

The main purposes of using facial implants areas follows;

Toprovide a much more aesthetic appearance of facial features, to eliminatedisproportions, to correct congenital problems or imbalances due to trauma. Ifpatients have a condition that may require maxillofacial surgery, surgeryshould be performed before implant application. The main conditions that mayrequire a facial implant are:

I.       Having a congenital curvatureof the facial bones,

II.    Increasing the chin protrusionin people with a slanted or weak chin,

III.  Clarification of the jaw line;thus ensuring that the face is framed and the neck becomes distinguishable,

IV.  Making the cheeks much more prominent and fuller,

V.    Gaining proportion and contourto the face in cases where the facial structure is deteriorated due to aging,

VI.  Damage to tissues such as bone or cartilage in the face as a resultof trauma or injuries such as an accident,

VII.   Volume loss and deformation inbones due to trauma,

VIII.  Correction of small, upper orfuture cheekbones,

IX.  Irregularities in the forehead bone.

Thefact that there is no obstacle to facial implants in the general health statusof the patients is a sufficient condition for implant applications

In Which Areas Can Facial Implant Be Applied?

The areas where facial implants are mostcommonly applied are the cheeks and chin. However, implants can also be made inthe nose, around the eyes or in the lateral areas of the head. Areas andimplant types where facial implants can be applied are:

    Jaw Implants

Available in many different shapes, chinimplants are ideal for providing a horizontal, vertical or square appearance tothe chin. Applications can be performed on the jaw tip, lower jawbone and upperjawbone.

    Jaw Tip Implants

Jaw tip implants are applied to people whosechin tip is back or smaller than it should be. In this application, an implantis placed at the tip of the chin in order to lengthen the lower jaw. In thismethod, where special medpor implants are used, bone cells ossify by enteringthe pores of the implants, which have a special porous structure. Implantapplication can be made from the part between the lip and the teeth or underthe chin. The scar after the operation is quite small. Depending on thepatient's condition, local or general anesthesia may be preferred. Jawimplants, which are made to balance the face proportion, can be performed in thesame session as rhinoplasty. It is possible for patients to be discharged onthe same day after the procedure.

    Lower Jaw Bone Implants

In lower jaw bone implants, also called mandibleimplants, it is essential to make the jaw corner more prominent on the face. Inthis operation, which is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, generalanesthesia can also be applied depending on the patient's condition. Theincision is usually made through the mouth. After this implant application, which can be done at the same time with rhinoplasty to ensure facialproportion, the patients are discharged on the same day.

    Cheekbone Implants

Cheekbone implants, also called zygoma implants, are applied to people with insufficient protrusions on the cheekbone. Therefore, the projection of the face and cheekbone area is increased. Siliconeor medpor prostheses can be used to increase the volume in the area. Since theincision is made through the mouth, there is no visible scar after theoperation. General anesthesia, local anesthesia or sedation may be preferred bythe doctor. The operation can be performed in the same session as rhinoplasty. It is possible to be discharged on the same day.

    Upper Jaw Bone Implants

Upper jaw bone implants, also called maxilla implants, are applied in patients with underdeveloped upper jaw bone. In order for the cheek or nose edge to have a more projectile appearance, prostheses are placed in the area.

In addition, nose implants, around the eyesimplants, lip implants and cheek implants are among the types of facialimplants that can be applied. While the nose implant is generally used duringnose shaping surgeries, the implants around the eyes are applied to fill theunder-eye pits or to strengthen the infraorbital edge.

    Considerations After Facial Implant Applications

The patient's age, general health status, andvarious factors are determinants of the healing process. Most of the patientswho underwent facial implant applications usually return to their normal lifewithin a week or two. However, in general, 6 to 12 weeks are required for fullrecovery. The important points that patients should know after the operationare as follows:

It is considered normal to havebruising and swelling in the application area after the surgery,

It is normal for patients toexperience mild or moderate pain or discomfort for a few days.

The patient's face should lookupwards at a 45-degree angle for 1 week,

For a few days after surgery, patients should follow a liquid diet, up to ten days a light diet program willbe beneficial,

The operation area should notbe contacted,

Temporary restriction of facialmovements is considered normal,

During the recovery period, excessive force should not be applied to the surgical area,

If dissolvable stitches are used, these stitches will disappear on their own; but in cases where normal stitchesare used, the stitches in question should be removed within 2 weeks,

All care instructionsrecommended by the surgeon should be followed,

It may be necessary to wear acompression garment,

It may be necessary to insert adrain to prevent fluid and blood accumulation,

The use of antibiotics may berecommended by the doctor.

Paying attention to all these issues is veryimportant in terms of shortening the healing process. Also, do not forget toget support from an experienced and professional physician who is an expert inthe field!
