What Are The Types Of Implants Used In Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Implants that make the breasts look much morevoluminous are also called silicone or prosthesis. Implants used in breastaugmentation surgeries are divided into three according to their shape, contentand surface structure. Things to know about these implant types are as follows:

Breast Implants According To Their Shapes

Breast implants can be round or drop-shaped inshape. Round breast implants are called round, and drop-shaped breast implantsare called anatomical implants. The breast tissue or structure determineswhether to use a round implant or a drop implant. It is possible to say thatround implants are more commonly used in breast augmentation operations.

However, in cases where breast tissue is less,drop-shaped implants may be preferred to achieve a more natural appearance. Thefeatures of these implants are as follows:

Round Implant

  • It is in the shape of a hemisphere,
  • The middle part has a thick structure,
  • The milk area of the breast gains a fuller appearance.

Drop (Anatomical) Implant

  • It has a shape resembling a raindrop,
  • The lower part is wider while the upper part is thin,
  • The lower part of the chest appears fuller than the upper part,
  • It can be applied to people with less breast sagging,
  • There is usually no need for erection afterwards.

Which of these two types of implants will beused is decided after consultations between the patient and the surgeon and 3Dimaging techniques and the patient's opinions.

Breast Implants by Content

According to their contents, breast implantsare divided into two as silicone and saline. In both types of implants, theouter part of the prosthesis is covered with silicone. It containsphysiological saline, which can also be described as gel-like silicone or saltwater. Here are some things to know about these two implant types:

Breast Implant with Serum Physiological Content

  • It can be placed through incisions made from the belly button or armpit area,
  • There is a risk of leakage due to trauma; however, in such cases, the breast or breast tissue is not damaged,
  • It has a shorter lifespan than silicone prostheses.

Silicone Containing Breast implant

  • It can be placed through incisions made in the belly button or armpit area,
  • There is no risk of damage due to trauma,
  • Since it contains sticky molecules, there is no leakage,
  • Its lifespan is longer than saline prostheses.

Breast Implants According To Surface Shapes

Silicone outer surface, which is hard inbreast prostheses, can be textured or smooth. These two types of implants canbe placed in the armpit area, belly button, nipple or under the breast. Theycan also be placed under or above the muscles, under the breast, or under themuscle membrane. Breast implants with a rough surface have a higher risk ofencapsulation than implants with a smooth surface. Therefore, flat-surfacedimplants are more preferred.

How to Choose the Right Implant in Breast AugmentationSurgery?

In breast augmentation surgeries, there aremany factors that determine the right implant selection, from the structure ofthe breasts to their volume, from the structure of the body to the expectationsof the patient. In addition, there are many steps that need to be plannedbefore the operation, from the area where the implants will be placed to theplacement area, from the size of the implants to the technique to be used. Oneof the most important parts here is the joint decision of the surgeon and thepatient on all these elements and procedures.

There are a number of criteria that plasticsurgeons look at for the right implant selection in breast augmentation  surgeries. It is possible to list these criteria as follows:

  • Most women have an asymmetry between the two breasts. If this asymmetry is evident and it is desired to be corrected, the prosthesis selection should be made accordingly. For example, if one breast is smaller than the other, the prosthesis to be attached to that breast should be formed accordingly.

The more important all these factors are inthe selection of prosthesis, the more important is the selection of aspecialist surgeon for the success of the operation. That's why you shouldalways work with an expert and experienced plastic surgeon.

Things to Know About Implants Used in Breast AugmentationSurgery

Many people have some questions about whether  breast implants are harmful or how long they last. The answers to some of thequestions asked about breast implants are as follows:

  • Breast implants are safe and do not cause any health problems. However, in cases where the implant is not accepted by the body, the formation of a capsule, that is, a membrane, around the implant is considered normal.
  • Although breast augmentation operations are commonly performed under general anesthesia, they can also be rarely performed under local anesthesia.
  • In operations performed under the breast, a scar of 4 cm is formed; this scar is only visible when the breast is lifted. In operations performed under the armpit or areola, it is not possible to see an external scar.
  • Patients can be discharged on the same day, return to work after 3-4 days and start sports activities at the end of 6 to 8 weeks.
  • The life of the implants varies according to the brand used. Some prostheses can be used for 15 to 20 years, depending on how they are used and how they are placed.
  • Placed implants do not prevent mammography or any radiological imaging.

Although thisinformation gives sufficient information about breast augmentation surgeriesand the implants used, the final decision about the method and implant type tobe used should be made by the plastic surgeon after the physical examination.
