What Is Lingual Orthodontics?

In lingual orthodontics, which is a bracesmethod, position disorders and crowding in the teeth are eliminated. Since thewires and brackets are placed inside the tooth during the treatment, they areinvisible when viewed from the outside and eliminate aesthetic concerns.

Theduration of treatment is the same as standard braces treatment. During thefirst few weeks, wear may occur due to the wires touching the tongue, but thiswill disappear over time. In lingual orthodontics, the personalized productionof braces minimizes the margin of error. Lingual orthodontic treatment does nothave any disadvantages except that the costs are slightly higher.

Who Is Lingual Orthodontics Suitable For?

Lingual or invisible braces can be applied toindividuals of all ages. However, lingual orthodontics are preferred morefrequently by individuals who are constantly in the society and need to stay incontact with people, such as actors, teachers or principals.

In addition to allthese, all individuals in the following group may prefer lingual orthodontics:

  • People with an imbalance in the lower or upper jaw,
  • People who have a forward shifting problem in their teeth,
  • People with general orthodontic problems,
  • People who care about their appearance or have aesthetic concerns,
  • People with teeth grinding problems.

Lingual orthodontic treatment can be easilyapplied to anyone who experiences the above conditions, regardless of age.

How Is Lingual Orthodontics Done?

Although no preliminary preparation isrequired in standard braces treatments, since lingual orthodontics is apersonalized treatment, the brackets must be prepared in the laboratoryenvironment according to the inclination of the posterior surface of the teeth.Lingual wires to be attached to the teeth are usually produced with nickel andtitanium alloy. Two techniques specific to lingual orthodontics, Harmony andIncognito, are used during the treatment.

CAD/CAM system is used in order tofully adapt the brackets produced in these techniques to the teeth of thepatients. After the treatment is completed, regular control is required so thatthe braces do not have a compatibility problem with the teeth. The duration oftreatment varies from person to person, but on average it is between 6 monthsand 3 years. 

After Lingual Orthodontics

It is normal for patients to feel pain for awhile after treatment is completed. Although the adaptation period differs fromperson to person, it is 2-3 days for some patients and 4-5 days or more forsome patients. In addition, the habituation time in lingual orthodontics islonger than in standard braces treatment.

After wearing braces, more food residuesaccumulate on the teeth than normal. This can cause various dental and gumdiseases, especially plaque and caries. Therefore, it is important to maintainoral hygiene regularly.

In this process, you can double the time you spendbrushing your teeth. In addition, you can use dental floss, an interdentalbrush and a mouthwash.

What Are The Advantages Of Lingual Orthodontics?

The fact that it is invisible from the outsideand eliminates aesthetic concerns can be considered as the main advantage of lingual orthodontics.

Other prominent advantages of this treatment method areas follows:

Treatment times for standard braces andlingual orthodontics are almost the same. However, lingual orthodontic costsmay be higher than standard braces.
